The first book off the Unfiltered press is UNFILTERED Paddle Drama: How I Nearly Drowned at Canoe Club (Three Times) ~ Makaio’s full confession, delivered from Paradise with sand still in it.

Join the list and the opening chapter lands in your inbox the moment it leaves the beach. After that, you’ll hear from us when a new book drops, and roughly never otherwise. No spam. Occasional nonsense. Always funny.

A taste, so you know what you’re signing up for

The canoe club meets every Saturday at seven, which on island time means seven-thirty, which in my case meant seven-fifteen because I wanted to make a good impression. This was my first mistake. Arriving early to a canoe club means you are the only person there when the coach asks for a volunteer, and the ocean is right there, listening.

“You paddled before?” Uncle Kimo asked, in the tone of a man who already knew the answer and was asking for the entertainment value.

“Plenty times,” I said. This was technically true. I had paddled a kayak once, at a resort, in a pool, and a rental paddleboat shaped like a swan, which I maintain counts. The swan and I had an understanding. The six-man canoe and I would not.

Here is what they don’t tell you about outrigger canoes: everyone in the boat has a job, and the boat can tell when you’re lying about yours. Seat three is the power seat, Kimo said, putting me in seat three, which I have since learned is what you do with the guy whose power you’d like to keep an eye on.

For the record, and there are records; Auntie Rose was filming for the club newsletter, the first huli wasn’t fully my fault. The wave came in sideways. The second one, okay, that one has my fingerprints on it. The third one is the reason this book exists.

The rest of chapter one, including all three near-drownings and the newsletter photo caption that made it worse, is what the free chapter is for.

One list, three promises: you’ll get the free chapter first, you’ll hear when each book goes live on Amazon, and you can leave any time (though Auntie Rose will notice).
